Here at Good Sounds, we are primarily known as an audiovisual company that designs customized, high-end home theaters and smart home systems in Orange County homes. But did you know we also do customized security system design and installation? Our team can give your Orange County home a high-tech security system that will help keep your home safe and secure.
As you might imagine, security cameras play a big part in modern home security systems. Not only can they help you monitor the activity in and around your home, but they can also be very effective deterrents. Having your home outfitted with security cameras is known to be one of the best ways to keep burglars and other intruders from entering your home or property (that and having a large barking dog or two).
So, what should you look for in a home security system, and specifically in-home security cameras? Here are three important things to consider:
Solely Cloud-Based Systems Leave You Vulnerable
You hear a lot about cloud-based systems these days, such as Nest and Ring. These are popular among consumers, but are very susceptible to critical failure. For example, they are basically useless if there is a power outage or if the home’s Wi-Fi or ISP service goes down. Cloud-based systems can also be hacked or compromised, creating a security breach.
In the security systems we install, we use the cloud only as a backup and to augment local storage. All of our systems are hard-wired directly to a local network video recorder with battery backup. If the power goes out or the Wi-Fi goes down, our camera systems keep recording and send the video to a secure local storage device. Our cameras can also be backed up at a separate secure site, and homeowners can be given remote access to the footage.
The cloud does have its benefits when it comes to security video, such as providing useful tools for searching through archived footage, but it should not be used as the sole method for video storage.
Security Camera Video Footage is Better than Ever!
We’ve all seen the dark, grainy videos on the news of criminals breaking into homes or stores. Footage like this is usually too poor to be able to positively identify anyone and is basically useless. Well, not with the systems we install!
Security camera technology has leap-frogged forward in recent years. We are now installing 12-megapixel cameras in Orange County homes, which correlate to 4K video resolution! These cameras can capture nighttime video over distances of more than 150 feet using powerful infrared technology, combined with ultra-high resolution to obtain facial recognition in the dark.
PoE Technology Helps Make Better Security Possible
With power over ethernet (PoE) technology, network cables can carry electrical power to devices like security cameras. This powerful tool allows us to design and install security systems without the limitation of needing an electrical outlet at a location where we want to place a camera.
Using PoE for security systems has many advantages, including:
- Flexibility: Cameras can be easily re-positioned and additional cameras can be easily added to the system as needed.
- Cost Savings: Homeowners save money by not having to run expensive electrical power cabling to all of the places they want to install cameras. Only network cables are needed, and unlike electrical cables, they can be located anywhere and do not need to be installed by a certified electrician.
- Device Protection: PoE delivery protects devices like security cameras from damage from electrical overload or incorrect installation.
These are just a few of the things to be thinking about if you are considering installing a home security system at your Orange County residence.
